How to install Gimp 2.10.14 on a Chromebook

Today we are looking at how to install Gimp 2.10.14 or the newest version on a Chromebook!  It can look a bit challenging but possible for sure!  We created a video for a visual guide as well as an audio guide.  We hope that you will find it helpful.  Please find the instructions below to install Gimp, it is the same as those which we used in the video.

We used Flatpak to install Gimp with as we get the latest version, where the version of Gimp which is in the Linux repository on your Chromebook is much older.

Gimp as a Flatpak has a slightly different than other installation as the plugin paths are different, but a person can use them, look here for more information.

Update - Since the release of Chrome OS 80, the Linux Apps have been upgraded and the installation process has become much easier.  We removed the commands which are no longer needed, so you can just ignore those steps in the video and only do the steps with commands below.  Please comment on the YouTube video, if you need any assistance or if you would like an updated video!

Please take note that with the release of Chrome OS 90,  the location of Linux Apps has been changed in the Chromebook’s settings.  Have a look at this tutorial, to see how to turn on Linux apps and then continue with the installation tutorial.
