How to install Geary on a Chromebook

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of installing Geary, a modern email client for GNOME, on your Chromebook. Geary offers a clean, intuitive interface for managing your emails efficiently. Let's get started!

Enabling Linux Apps on Your Chromebook

Before we can install Geary, we need to ensure that Linux apps are enabled on your Chromebook. If you haven't done this yet, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Chromebook's Settings
  2. Navigate to the Advanced section in the left panel
  3. Click on the Developers section
  4. Turn on the Linux apps option

This process may take a few minutes to complete. Once finished, you'll have access to a Linux terminal on your Chromebook.

Installing Geary

Now that Linux apps are enabled, we can proceed with installing Geary. We'll use the terminal to run a couple of simple commands:

1) sudo apt update
2) sudo apt install geary

Let's break down what these commands do:

  • The first command updates your package lists, ensuring you have the latest information about available software.
  • The second command installs Geary along with any necessary dependencies.

When prompted, enter 'Y' to confirm the installation. The process might take a few minutes depending on your internet speed.

Using Geary on Your Chromebook

After installation, you can launch Geary from your Linux apps menu. On first launch, you'll be guided through setting up your email accounts. Geary supports various email providers including Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook.

Geary offers several features that make email management a breeze:

  • Conversation view: Emails are grouped by conversation, making it easier to follow threads.
  • Fast search: Quickly find the emails you need with Geary's powerful search function.
  • Inline reply: Respond to emails without opening a new window.
  • Notifications: Get notified of new emails even when Geary isn't running.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you encounter any issues during installation or usage, try these steps:

  • Ensure your Chromebook's software is up to date
  • Restart your Chromebook and try the installation process again
  • Check your internet connection
  • If Geary doesn't appear in your app list after installation, try running 'geary' in the terminal
