How to install Zrythm on a Chromebook

Today, we're exploring how to install Zrythm, a powerful digital audio workstation, on your Chromebook. This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, complementing our video tutorial with detailed written instructions.

What is Zrythm?

Zrythm is an open-source, feature-rich digital audio workstation (DAW) designed for music production, audio editing, and MIDI sequencing. It offers a modern interface, non-destructive editing, and a wide range of plugins, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced musicians working on Chromebooks.

Before we begin, ensure that your Chromebook supports Linux apps (Crostini). If you're unsure, you can check our list of Chromebooks with Linux Apps support.

Installation Process

We'll be using Flatpak to install Zrythm. Flatpak is a universal package management system that allows for easy installation and updates of applications across different Linux distributions.

Step 1: Enable Linux Apps

If you haven't already enabled Linux apps on your Chromebook, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Chromebook's Settings
  2. Navigate to the Advanced section
  3. Click on the Developers section
  4. Turn on Linux apps

Step 2: Install Zrythm

Once Linux apps are enabled, open the Terminal and run the following commands:

1) sudo apt update
2) sudo apt install flatpak
3) sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
4) sudo flatpak install flathub org.zrythm.Zrythm
5) sudo chown root:root /usr/bin/bwrap && sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/bwrap

Let's break down what each command does:

  1. Updates the package lists for upgrades and new package installations.
  2. Installs Flatpak, the package management system we'll use to install Zrythm.
  3. Adds the Flathub repository, which hosts a wide variety of Flatpak applications.
  4. Installs Zrythm from the Flathub repository.
  5. Sets the correct permissions for the bubblewrap (bwrap) utility, which Flatpak uses to create sandboxes for applications.
