How to install Inkscape 0.92.4 on a Chromebook


Today we are looking at how to install Inkscape 0.92.4 or the newest version on a Chromebook!  It can look a bit challenging but possible for sure!  We created a video for a visual guide as well as an audio guide.  We hope that you will find it helpful.  Please find the instructions below to install Inkscape, it is the same as those which we used in the video.

We used Flatpak to install Inkscape with as we get the latest version

Update - Since the release of Chrome OS 80, the Linux Apps have been upgraded and the installation process has become much easier.  We removed the commands which are no longer needed, so you can just ignore those steps in the video and only do the steps with commands below.  Please comment on the YouTube video, if you need any assistance or if you would like an updated video!

Please take note that with the release of Chrome OS 90,  the location of Linux Apps has been changed in the Chromebook’s settings.  Have a look at this tutorial, to see how to turn on Linux apps and then continue with the installation tutorial.

Update: with the release of Chrome OS 96, the Linux container on a Chromebook has been upgraded to a newer version.  Because of this, we need to run one additional command for the application to work, we added it to the list of commands.

4) sudo apt install flatpak
5) no longer needed*

7) sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
8) sudo flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP
9) sudo chown root:root /usr/bin/bwrap && sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/bwrap
