How to install thinkorswim Desktop on a Chromebook


Today we are looking at how to install thinkorswim Desktop on a Chromebook.  Please follow the video/audio guide as a tutorial where we explain the process step by step and use the commands below.

This tutorial will only work on Chromebooks with an Intel or AMD CPU (with Linux Apps Support) and not those with an ARM64 architecture CPU.

Please take note that with the release of Chrome OS 90,  the location of Linux Apps has been changed in the Chromebook’s settings.  Have a look at this tutorial, to see how to turn on Linux apps and then continue with the installation tutorial.

Commands Used:
1) sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list sources.list
2) sudo echo deb https://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main  | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
3) sudo apt update
4) sudo apt install openjdk-8-jdk
5) sudo mv sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list
6) sudo apt update
7) wget https://mediaserver.thinkorswim.com/installer/InstFiles/thinkorswim_installer.sh
8) chmod 755 thinkorswim_installer.sh
9) ./thinkorswim_installer.sh
10) sudo apt install menulibre
11) menulibre

  1. have to reinstall TOS every time as the launcher does not work. Not been able to find a workaround. Several persons have reported the identical problem but no solutions. (by the way, instructions upto the point of installation were excellent)
