Installing Shadow PC on a Chromebook
Shadow PC is a cloud-based gaming service that allows users to stream high-performance games on various devices, including Chromebooks. This guide will walk you through the process of installing Shadow PC on your Chromebook, providing you with access to a powerful virtual gaming PC in the cloud.
Prerequisites
Before we begin, please note that this tutorial is only compatible with Chromebooks that have an Intel or AMD CPU with Linux Apps Support. Chromebooks with ARM64 architecture CPUs are not supported for this method.
It's important to mention that Shadow PC is a paid service. While we'll be installing the desktop version in this tutorial, there's also a Play Store version available for Chromebooks.
Enabling Linux Apps
The first step in our process is to enable Linux apps on your Chromebook. Here's how:
- Open your Chromebook's Settings
- Navigate to the Advanced section in the left panel
- Click on the Developers section
- Turn on the Linux apps option
This action will set up a Linux environment on your Chromebook, which is necessary for installing and running Shadow PC.
Installation Process
Now that we have Linux apps enabled, we'll use the terminal to install Shadow PC. Here are the commands you'll need to run:
1) sudo apt update 2) sudo apt install libnss3 libva-glx2 libva-wayland2 libgles-dev fuse kmenuedit 3) wget https://update.shadow.tech/launcher/prod/linux/ubuntu_18.04/ShadowPC.AppImage 4) chmod 755 ShadowPC.AppImage 5) ./ShadowPC.AppImage --disable-framerate-limit 6) kmenuedit
Let's break down what these commands do:
- Updates the package lists for upgrades and new package installations.
- Installs necessary dependencies for Shadow PC to run properly.
- Downloads the Shadow PC AppImage file.
- Makes the AppImage file executable.
- Runs Shadow PC with frame rate limiting disabled for optimal performance.
- Opens the menu editor, allowing you to add Shadow PC to your app launcher for easy access.
Additional Information
Shadow PC uses cloud computing technology to stream a high-performance Windows PC to your device. This means you can play demanding games or use resource-intensive applications on your Chromebook, which might not typically have the hardware capabilities to run such software locally.
One advantage of using Shadow PC is that you don't need to worry about hardware upgrades or maintenance – the cloud PC is regularly updated and maintained by the Shadow team.
Troubleshooting Tips
- If you encounter issues with video playback, try updating your Chromebook's graphics drivers.
- For the best experience, use a wired internet connection or a strong, stable Wi-Fi connection.
- If the app doesn't launch after installation, try restarting your Chromebook and attempting to run it again.
